Below is a listing of Web sites of associations, socities, and foundations, mostly in the area of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R).  These sites have been selected by the library staff and provide a good starting point for information in the specialty of PM&R.  For additional information, go to the Directory of Information Resources Online (DIRLINE), the National Library of Medicine's online database.  Associations related to specific specialty are listed iunder that specialty.

American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (AAPM&R)
AAPM&R is the national medical society representing more than 7,000 physicians who are specialists in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a premier journal in the field of PM&R, is published by Elsevier for the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. 


American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnosis Medicine(AANEM)
The primary goal of the AANEM is serve physicians who diagnose and treat patients with disorders of muscle and nerve, extend the knowledge of electrodiagnostic medicine, and improve the quality of patient care.


American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation(ABPMR)
Founded in 1947, the ABPMR is one of the 24 certifying boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.  The ABPMR establishes the requirements for certification and maintaining certification, creates its examinations, strives to improve training, and contributes to setting the standards for physical medicine and rehabilitation.


American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine(ACRM)
The American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine serves people with disabling conditions by promoting rehabilitation research and facilitating information dissemination and the transfer of technology.  Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a premier journal in the field of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation is published by Elsevier for the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation,


American Hospital Association(AHA)
Founded in 1898, the American Hospital Association (AHA), located in Chicago, Illinois, is the national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. The AHA provides education for health care leaders and is a source of information on health care issues and trends.


American Medical Association(AMA)
Founded in 1847 and located in Chicago, Illinois, the American Medical Association (AMA) is a voluntary association of physicians in the United States which sets standards for the medical profession and advocates on behalf of physicians. The Web site provides inlks to several resources including DoctorFinder which gives basic professional information on virtually every licensed physician in the United States.


American Medical Rehabilitation Provider Association(AMPRA)
American Medical Rehabilitation Provider Association (AMPRA) is a non-profit trade association representing medical rehabilitation providers, including freestanding hospitals, units in general hospitals, outpatient facilities, skilled nursing facilities, and others. AMRPA is focused on providing its members legislative advocacy, technical assistance, and information services.


American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)
AOTA is the nationally recognized association of over 35,000 occupational therapists, OT assistants, and students of OT.  The web site has specific sections for consumers, students, and educators and provides links to number of resources. The American Journal of Occupational Therapy (AJOT) is an official publication of the Association and provides full-text online for the members.


American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)
The APTA is a national organization representing more than 66,000 members. The site provides links to Accrediting Agencies, Health Care Organizations, Journals, and Research Tools. There is a special section for APTA members. The journal Physical Therapy is available online to APTA members (beginning with the January 1999 issue).


American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
The ASHA is the professional association for audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists.  This site has special sections for members & professionals, students, and the general public.  Included are: ASHA membership info, credentialing and accreditation; audiologist search; career tips; access to all four ASHA journals for members only.


Association of Academic Physiatrists(AAP)
The Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP) was founded in 1967 to serve as the national organization of physiatrists who are affiliated with medical schools.  The objectives of the Association are to promote the advancement of teaching and research in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation within an academic arena. The American
Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation is the official scholarly, peer-reviewed journal of the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP). 


Association of Rehabilitation Nurses(ARN)
The Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) promotes and advances professional rehabilitation nursing practice through education, advocacy, collaboration, and research. Included at this website are; membership, chapters, education, certification, awards & scholarships, research, online store, job postings, and links to several resources.


Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities(CARF)
Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) is an international nonprofit accrediting body.  CARF provides accreditation in the human services field—focusing on the areas of rehabilitation, employment and community, child and family, and aging services.


Directory of Information Resources Online(DIRLINE)
The DIRLINE is the National Library of Medicine's online database containing location and descriptive information about a wide variety of information resources including organizations.  This information may not be readily available in bibliographic databases. Each record may contain information on the publications, holdings, and services provided.


International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine(ISPRM)
The International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) is the result of the merger and integration of the International Rehabilitation Medicine Association (IRMA) and the International Federation of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (IFPM&R).


Joint Commission
An independent, not-for-profit organization, the Joint Commission formerly know as JCAHO is the nation’s predominant standards setting and accrediting body in health care. The Joint Commission’s comprehensive accreditation process evaluates an organization’s compliance with these standards and other accreditation requirements.

The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research(NIDRR)
NIDRR is a national leader in sponsoring research.  It is one of three components of the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) at the U.S. Department of Education.  NIDRR provides leadership and support for a comprehensive program of research related to the rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities.


National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research(NCMRR)
TheNCMRR was established within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is a component of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). The mission of NCMRR is to foster development of scientific knowledge needed to enhance the health, productivity, independence, and quality of life of persons with disabilities.


National Rehabilitation Information Center(NARIC)
The National Rehabilitation Information Center (NARIC) is a library and information center on disability and rehabilitation. NARIC distributes the results of federally funded research projects and maintains a monthly updated document collection of journal articles and books.
