Research Dissemination: The Art of Writing an Abstract for Conferences
Coad J., Devitt P.
Nurse Education in Practice. 2006, 6(2):112–116.
Available full-text only from the Marianjoy network.
This article aims to assist readers with developing an abstract for a conference in order to have a paper accepted for presentation at a conference, whether it is in poster or an oral format. This is important as the authors argue that use of conferences as a method of disseminating research findings and good practice is expanding each year. Drawing on author experiences, both as members of scientific review panels and as submitters of abstracts, the article includes a practical review about the meaning of an abstract, how to get started and then breaks down in clear sections what reviewers look for in a good abstract. There are also some key points on the actual process of review, which are helpful in understanding of what happens to an abstract following submission.
Reflections on Preparing a Poster for an RCN Conference
Nurse Researcher. 2010, 7(2):52-9.
Available full-text only from the Marianjoy network.
The acceptance letter for the RCN Annual International Nursing Research Conference signaled the start of my doctoral research dissemination process and my first attempt at presenting a poster. The poster is potentially an excellent springboard for discussion, since information provided on the poster will, by necessity, be superficial, leaving the interested reader to access the detail from the person most passionate, insightful, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the research – the presenter. This paper describes the planning, preparation and presentation of the poster followed by a critical reflection on the process in the light of literature.

Instructions for receiving the credits:
There are 3 parts to earning CE credit for these articles. All components must be completed between December 1 and January 31, 2013:
- After reading the articles, there is a short post-test on the Learning Link. To get to the Learning Link module, open and login to Learning Link, click View course catalog, select ALL courses, and then enter PRCH4017 to find the December / January journal module. You must complete the post-test on or before January 31 and score at least 80% correct to earn CE credit.
- An evaluation of this learning opportunity is required to obtain the CE credit. A link to the evaluation will be found at the end of the post-test.
- As part of the requirements to earn the CE credit, you must participate in a discussion about the article. This discussion will take place via Google Docs/Drive. A Nursing Journal Club designee will generate the discussion. You must respond / participate in the discussion at least 1 time by January 31 to be compliant.
To add some extra excitement to our Journal Club, we will be offering another $25 gift card in a raffle drawing for members that earn CE credit over the months of October, November, and December/January. Raffle will take place at the end of December/January. Be sure to participate so your name will be included in the drawing. As an additional perk, if a participant encourages another Journal Club member to join in the discussion (and the referred member states the referring member’s name in their discussion), we will add the referring member’s name an additional time in the drawing. Remember that both members must earn their CE credit for the month for the referring member to be entered an additional time in the drawing.
The winner will be notified by e-mail and the gift card will be sent to them within 2 weeks after the close of the month.
Instructions to access the Google Docs/Drive Web page for Discussion and to post comments:
It should take you approximately 1 hour to read the articles, take the quiz and complete the evaluation.
As a member of the Nursing Journal Club, you will automatically receive subsequent articles on the first of each month. If you would like to cancel your membership at any time, please contact Cindy Bright via e-mail or contact her at 630.909.8027. We will send out a flyer announcing the next article approximately 2 weeks prior to sending it out.
